USA Today: New Advice for Online Banking for SMB’s
Jan 11, 2010
Byron Acohido’s story “Online banking warning surprises some experts” in USA Today relays some good, simple information security advice for Small and Medium Businesses (SMB’s): they should perform online banking transactions on a secure, dedicated PC (a PC that is free of security compromises and not used for Email, web-browsing, or any other network activity.)
What’s particularly interesting is where the advice came from, how the advice was delivered, and when the advice was originally given. The advice came from the American Bankers Association (ABA) and the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), but don’t expect to find the information easily accessible on the ABA or FBI websites. The apparently strongly worded advisory document was issued confidentially by the ABA directly to banks—not to the general public. The advisory was reportedly issued by the ABA and the Financial Services Information Services and Analysis Center (FS-ISAC) in Aug, 2009.
I fail to understand why the ABA, FBI, or FS-ISAC are unwilling to publicly give such basic, common sense advice to SMB’s, and I applaud Acohido and his editors at USA Today for putting the information in the mainstream. (More detailed information on this story can be found on Acohido’s Blog.)
